Architecture

The system consists of a user client and a Management Module.

When user clicks on a link of a video, the underlying JavaScript checks with the client on the user end if the video is available from the overlay network. If it is, the client starts playing the video while grooming streams from various users’ clients. In cases where the video is not available from the overlay network, it is defaulted to the CDN.

The user clients exchange file fragments between themselves in a fully distributed manner.

The management module can accommodate also auxiliary peers that emulate user clients. These peers are optional and can be used to pre-seed popular content on the overlay network for quick jump-start. The Management Module is capable of maintaining different users’ categories, where assigning different management policies for different users segments optimizes usage of the network.
